Thoughts for the Day—I Need This to Calm Down

Jasmine always thought, “People are judging me.” The thought arrived in every meeting, every conversation, and felt like an unshakable truth. But when she paused and asked, “Can I absolutely know it’s true?” something surprising happened. She couldn’t be sure. Some people might be focused on her — but many others probably weren’t.

The brain has a natural pull toward cognitive bias — a habit of filling in gaps with assumptions. Under stress, it leans toward negative assumptions, because negative predictions once helped humans prepare for danger. But today, this bias makes our thoughts sound more certain than they really are.

When we question certainty, the brain learns cognitive flexibility. Instead of defaulting to one rigid story, it begins to allow for multiple possibilities. This flexibility strengthens resilience and makes stress easier to manage.

Each time we ask ourselves if a thought is absolutely true, we loosen the grip of bias. And together, we find freedom in the space between certainty and possibility.

12 noon EST Mindset Chat: If Joan is hosting, she will give updates on all the exciting things taking place in the ARC. On those days, the Checkin Chat portion of the hour is shorter than other check-ins and will take place after this.  The check-ins are a time to talk about problems, wins, or whatever is on your mind
