It is very important to evaluate services for food addicts carefully.  Many 'weight-loss' programs can actually make food addiction worse. Services may claim to treat food addiction but leave addictive foods in the food plan.  Food plans may not have enough calories which can intensify obsession with food. Food plans which fail to balance proteins with carbohydrates may result in glucose levels which are too high or too low. Pharmaceuticals have distressing side effects including depression, memory loss, and heart disease. For any of the services listed below, food addicts are encouraged to use the food lists available under the Handout page of this site.

Breaking Free from Food Addiction - The Kay Sheppard Group.

Food addiction is characterized by obsession with food, obsession with weight and loss of control over the amount of food eaten. Addiction involves the compulsive pursuit of a mood change by engaging repeatedly in episodes of binge eating despite adverse consequences. Abstinence is achieved by the elimination of compulsive eating, volume eating, under eating, addictive eating, and all of the substances that will trigger an addictive response.

Food Addiction Recovery

Food Addiction Recovery is a group that focuses on food as a drug and ways to manage that addiction. There is no right way to recovery. Your path is your own. Hopefully, through our group wisdom and support, we will all get closer to the freedom that comes when the food obsession is managed. Ask questions. Give support.

Food Addiction - Breaking It.

This is a group dedicated to recovery through nutrition, fitness and support. There is no judgement, no ridicule and no sales. This is a safe place and where members will find their lives changing for the better. Post thoughts for support and others' knowledge.

Independent Practitioners

Independent practitioners have known about food addiction and the use of abstinent food plans since the 1980's. The practitioners listed here are familiar with supporting clients in the development of lifestyles that incorporate abstinent food plans for the long-term.  They employ recovery models that are similar to recovery from addiction to substances of abuse.

Residential Centers

Treatment centers provide important relief from environmental pressures and a safe space for addicts to accomplish withdrawal and establish abstinence.  Residents also receive expert support for working through personal issues which may be a barrier to recovery of normal eating patterns.
