Thoughts for the Day—Seeing the Cost of Belief
This week we move into the third question in our current series based on the work of Byron Katie: How do you react when you believe that thought?
Believing a painful thought doesn’t just stay in the mind—it affects the body, emotions, and relationships. A sentence like “I’m broken” can tighten the chest, quicken the breath, and spark cravings for quick comfort. It can lead us to withdraw, lash out, or give up.
Neuroscience shows that thoughts and emotions activate the same stress pathways as real danger. Believing a painful thought triggers cortisol and adrenaline, putting the body into fight-or-flight mode. This is why certain beliefs feel so overwhelming: they set off a whole-body reaction.
When we ask how we react to a thought, we shine a light on its cost. This isn’t about judgment—it’s about noticing. And once we notice, we create space for gentleness, and for new ways of responding.
This week, we'll explore the ways thoughts ripple through us—in our bodies, behaviors, and relationships—and how noticing these patterns can bring relief. Together, we'll practice seeing clearly, so compassion can find us in the midst of stress.

11a EST Restore Hour: This hour focuses on activities that help with cognitive repair
12 noon EST Mindset Chat: If Joan is hosting, she will give updates on all the exciting things taking place in the ARC. On those days, the Checkin Chat portion of the hour is shorter than other check-ins and will take place after this. The check-ins are a time to talk about problems, wins, or whatever is on your mind

4p EST Resilience Chat: Various ARC Exercises— Check-in chats are a place to talk about problems, wins, or whatever is on your mind. This hour may consist of check-ins, ARC exercises, or a combination of both

7p EST Relaxation Hour: ARC Tails; Pet Hour: This hour is a chance to socialize and connect with brain-calming activities
